Belinda Carlisle: Lips Unsealed

A collection of the powerful female leaders of post punk and new wave of the 80s inspired by Belinda Carlisle‘s autobiography, “Lips Unsealed.”

I can't recall my introduction to Belinda Carlisle. It was either watching her on MTV as a solo artist (“Heaven Is A Place On Earth”) or listening to the Go-Go's during the beginning credits of Fast Times At Ridgemont High. (“We Got The Beat”)

When I hear the sound of Belinda Carlisle's voice, either on her solo albums or with the Go-Gos, it always takes me back to the era of MTV and the 80s.

Belinda Carlisle was the lead singer of the all female group, the Go-Gos. The Go-Gos were the first all female group that wrote and played their own instruments to be nominated for a Grammy. They were nominated for a Grammy in 1982 for best new artist for their album, “Beauty And The Beat.”

Throughout the 80s, the Go-Go’s sound was influential to the post punk new wave movement. In 1986, after three albums with the Go-Gos, Belinda Carlisle left the group to pursue a solo career with her first album “Belinda.” Belinda Carlisle's new sound would move away from her signature post punk new wave sound into a more adult contemporary pop sound.

Belinda Carlisle would spend the rest of her career moving between a solo artist and continuously reuniting with the Go-Gos on new material and world tours.

Now over 40 years later, Belinda Carlisle and the Go-Gos are still together and still perform around the world. In 2021 the Go-Gos were the first all female band to be inducted into the rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame.

This playlist was inspired by the Go-Gos music and is made up of the 80s sound of post punk new wave by the strongest female leads in music at that time.
