Dave Grohl: Storytellers
This playlist is a joint venture inspired by Dave Kroll's memoir, “The Storyteller: Tales Of Life and Music.” and John Oates’s memoir, “Change Of Seasons.” I had to pull double duty with this playlist because there are just too many stories between the two.
This playlist is made up of 90s alternative hits mashed with the soft folk sounds Hall & Oates inspired 70s.
I first read John Oates's memoir about a month ago, and I was sitting around with a few songs to use for a playlist, but I didn't know how to finish it off. It wasn't until after reading Dave Grohl's memoir that I finally got the inspiration to finish it. I wanted to use slower alternative songs that told stories. Stories written by the artists who sang them.
I wanted to start this playlist off with Tom Petty because no one knows how to tell a story through lyrics then Tom did. Believe it or not once in the 90s after the death of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl was trying to find his place in music. He played on SNL as a drummer for Tom Petty.
Later on, Tom Petty asked Dave Grohl to go on tour with him as his full-time drummer. Dave Grohl made the wise decision to say no. He then, months later formed the group Foo Fighters.
What is a Foo Fighter?
foo fight·er
/ˈfo͞o ˌfīdər/
noun
plural noun: foo fighters
- an unidentified flying object of a kind reported by US pilots during World War II, usually described as a bright light or ball of fire.
Years after the end of Nirvana, Dave Grohl moved to North Carolina, where he built his own recording studio in the basement of his house. After the Tom Petty SNL gig, he went on to write and record the Foo Fighters first album.
Grohl wrote the songs, played all the instruments (drums, bass and guitar) and produced it by himself. Dave Grohl was conflicted with using his own name as a solo artist. He didn’t want to be known as “that guy from Nirvana.” Because of his fascination with UFOs he chose the name Foo Fighters.
Later, after he recorded his first album, he put together a touring band to tour with his new music. All future Foo Fighter albums were recorded using these musicians. Dave Grohl and Tom Petty are both amazing talents of storytelling through song.
The rest of these songs and the musicians who wrote and sang them all have their own stories to tell. There is no better place to tell a story then through a song. A song that touches your heart and your soul.
