Dark Wave
This playlist was inspired by Dark Wave musical artists from the 80s, such as Depeche Mode, Savage, and Ultravox.
80s New Wave is my favorite genre of music. With the rise in popularity of a new era of New Wave, currently known as Retrowave, I wanted to create a playlist that blends the old with the new.
Thanks to the 2011 movie Drive, with its iconic soundtrack of French Canadian New Wave, the retro sounds of the 80s are now back in full force.
This collection is Dark Wave.
Dark Wave is a subgenre of electronic music that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s, blending elements of post-punk, New Wave, and gothic rock. The genre is characterized by its melancholic, atmospheric, and often haunting sound.
Dark Wave combines synthetic beats, dark, sometimes eerie melodies, and a brooding mood, often with lyrics exploring themes such as existential despair, love, and introspection.
Musically, Dark Wave is typically driven by synthesizers, drum machines, and basslines, with some artists incorporating guitars or vocals that range from whispery to more dramatic, depending on the track. The genre is also closely related to goth, industrial, and electro, with some overlap between them.
While Dark Wave has evolved over time and influenced several other genres, it continues to be a niche yet cherished style for those who enjoy its moody, introspective vibe.
