Teresa Bangers
This playlist was inspired by my wife Teresa. She loves the sound of “Lady Bangers” from the 80s.
I first met my wife, Teresa online through a Taiwanese website back in 2010. We connected through MSN messenger - which doesn't exist anymore as something called a “language exchange.”
A “language exchange,” in Taiwan is when a native English speaker can meet a native Mandarin Chinese speaker, and get to know each other by teaching their native languages to each other. Really, this is just a cover for a dating website.
Teresa lived in a city that was two hours north of me, so I wasn't really interested in making the drive to meet her face-to-face. So we just chatted online.
Soon, I started to date someone and Teresa also started to date someone. For about a year, we didn't have any contact with each other, except for an occasional, “Hello. How are you doing?” through MSN.
In July 2012, I had recently broken up with my girlfriend and a good friend of mine who lives in Teresa's hometown invited me to his house to hangout.
Thinking about it. I remembered that Teresa also lived in this city. I quickly went on MSN, late on a Friday night and mentioned that I was going to come visit a friend of mine, and wondered if she had time to hangout, too.
I had never been to this city before, so it would be nice to have a tour guide to show me around.
The city is called Taichung. It is right in the middle of the island of Taiwan. Taichung is like the size of the greater Los Angeles area. When I arrived in Taichung, I was standing on the street outside my friend's house when I decided to call Teresa.
“Where in Taichung are you?”
“I’m in Tanzi.” A suburb of Taichung.
“Really!?” I live in Tanzi.” What street are you on?”
“Zhongxiao Road.”
“Really!? I live on Zhongxiao Road. What number are you at?”
“100.”
“HAHAHAHA! I’m at 10.”
We instantly connected through this funny coincidence and both of us laughing over the phone was a huge way to break the ice. She told me she would come pick me up at a restaurant which was across the street from my friend’s house.
One hour later, I was standing on the street corner in front of the restaurant waiting for Teresa thinking to myself, as most men would, what kind of a night is this going? Are we just going to be friends? Will she become my girlfriend? One night stand? Maybe…
When Teresa's car pulled up and stopped, I opened the passenger side door and looked inside. Within the first second after I first noticed her lips, then her eyes I knew instantly. I was in love. This was no one nightstand. I knew this was gonna take serious effort on my part. And it did. Twelve years later, we are still married and as happy as ever.
This is for you, Teresa. I love you.
