Where are you when MTV premiered on August 1, 1981?
MTV premiered on August 1, 1981 because it was in the middle of summer, so the executives at MTV knew that their demographic of students would begin watching MTV during the summer and in September would return to school (elementary school, junior high, high school or at university) and tell all their friends about it. The MTV audience quickly grew at an astonishing rate.
Myself - I was only six months old at the time, so I don't remember. What I do remember is watching Michael Jackson's “Thriller” video when I was three or four years old. That was my earliest childhood memory of watching MTV .
Growing up in Southern California we had cable in our house and watched MTV throughout its golden age from 1981 to 1992. Not only did I enjoy MTV but both my parents also loved it. Not only did we listen to records eight track tapes, cassettes and CDs for audio music, but when those weren't playing, the TV was tuned into channel 25 at the time to MTV.
