I Want My MTV - Memories
My life growing up in the 80s - music played a very important role on the memories that formed in my mind. I have very clear memories of watching music videos on MTV, listening to music on eight tracks, cassettes, records or CDs.
Music for the most part helps me remember things that happened in my life during that time. I can remember family or friends, or during a barbecue, at a friends house or just sitting around the living room doing nothing.
I remember the sound system my father had, growing up in the 80s. My father had a Realistic receiver, and Realistic speakers that he bought from RadioShack. You remember the ones.
The receivers were housed in a wooden box with chrome knobs, and when you pushed the power button you could hear the amplifiers revving up through the speakers. It almost had that sound of the DeLorean from “Back to the Future” when Doc turned on the flux capacitor.
I still have a RadioShack realistic receiver today. It's not the same exact one my father had, but it is the same model. (The display of my Realistic is the banner of my YouTube channel)
I found one on eBay maybe five years ago and have been using it ever since.
I remember in the late 80s maybe, 1988 or 1989 my father came home with a brand new state of the art stereo system. I remember the brand was called Fisher.
There was a receiver with an equalizer, turntable, a CD player and a cassette deck. The CD player I remember when my father brought that home, and I saw a CD for the very first time. I didn't know what it was. I didn't know how to use it, and of course, my father put the CD player up on the highest shelf on the wall unit and made sure that I was never allowed to touch it.
I was allowed to use the cassette deck, but of course I was never allowed to touch the equalizer.
I also remember the two speakers, Fisher, were so tall that the top of my head only went half way up the speakers. I could barely reached the top with my hands. It wasn't until a couple years later that I was finally tall enough taller than the speakers them self.
