I, Tina - Queen of Rock
This playlist was inspired by Tina Turner's autobiography, "I, Tina.”
My earliest memory of Tina Turner was listening to the “Private Dancer” album my parents had on vinyl. I very clearly remember listening to What’s Love Got To Do With It in 1984 and later watching the music video on MTV. Even though I was only three or four years old at the time, Tina was one of my biggest early music influences.
For most of my life I was unaware of her past catalogue including the Ike and Tina Turner years. Sadly only after recently reading her autobiography I’ve been introduced to her whole world.
This playlist includes music spanning from 1960 to 1985. Her most powerful and important songs that shaped her and the music Industry to follow.
Starting with the songs from the Turners’ Sue Records days that are pure R&B, that will unlikely ever be made again. During that era Tina proves herself to be a singer like no other since then or now.
Moving along though the 60s into the 70s, Tina showcases her artistic side by writing more of her own songs and finding her way to becoming one of the most passionate rock performers of all time.
When Tina reaches the 80s she is proclaimed as an, “Artistic Triumph” and a, “Comeback of the decade” with her “Private Dancer” album. Tina repositioned herself at the forefront of Rock ’n’ Roll.
Tina Turner had never had a number one album or single the US before “Private Dancer.” With this album she finally had her number one. She won four Grammy awards at the 1985 Grammys. Including a Grammy for best song for What’s Love Got To Do With It.
After appearing in the 1985 film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome she had seen her star rise to new heights that a black woman from Tennessee could have never imagined.
Born as Anna Mae Bullock in 1939, Tina Turner was later proclaimed the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll. Tina was inducted into the rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame in 2021 and will forever be a force in rock and pop music.
